Clairo – ‘Sofia’ song review

Next month, Clairo, a 20 year old singer from Massachusetts, will be releasing her debut album ‘Immunity’. Today she released the latest of her singles from that project, after dropping two previous songs that teased listeners.

Closer To You‘ was an intimate love song; Clairo self-harmonising, using a vocoder effect over a Rostam produced electronic backing track. ‘Bags‘ may have sounded like a more conventional pop song, but the heartbreaking lyrics detailed her struggles of being in a one-sided relationship. Both these tracks show incredible musical maturity from Clairo, which is slightly unexpected given her age and that this will be her first project that won’t be classified as ‘bedroom pop’ on Bandcamp.

With her latest track ‘Sofia’ from her upcoming album, Clairo crafts another near-perfect pop song. The guitar-laden instrumental almost resembles something from The Strokes, as Clairo sings about her realisation that she has ultimately fallen in love.

Whilst ‘Sofia‘ builds on the successes of the previous two singles, I feel that it’s not quite as strong as the previous releases. Maybe it’s just in my head, but I found that the chord progression of the chorus strongly resembled the pop song ‘So Am I, released earlier this year by Ava Max.

This doesn’t retract from the song too much, but it emphasises that the song is slightly less unique than her previous material. That said, be sure to give this and her previous singles a spin as Clairo is definitely one to watch, and expect big things when her debut releases next month.
