Two years after their smash album ‘Something To Tell You‘, HAIM are back. Their brand new track ‘Summer Girl‘ is a slower and jazzier tune than some of their previous more rock-focused material, but it is easily one of their best tracks to date.
The track takes influence from Lou Reed’s ‘Walk on the Wild Side‘ instrumentally, mimicking the song structure and iconic bassline of Reed’s 1972 rock track, as well as reworking the catchy “doo-doo-doo” refrain. HAIM give Reed credit on their single, but despite the obvious inspiration, they effectively create an original and chill summer song.
The diverse instrumental backing of the new track is a pleasant change from the catchy, rock tunes of HAIM in previous years, and perhaps a positive example for all artists seeking to change up their style. If this single is anything to go by, I’m excited to hear whatever HAIM put out next, and hope that an album announcement is coming very soon.
