Charlie Puth has returned with the brand new single, ‘I Warned Myself‘, his first release after his stellar album ‘Voicenotes‘ was released in May of last year. The new track ultimately feels like a bit of a tease to listeners, as Puth has an incredible vocal performance and a catchy bass-heavy instrumental, but the track sadly feels like it doesn’t really go anywhere.
On his last release, Charlie Puth’s sheer musical talent was obvious. The song ‘Attention‘ had an absolutely great bass-line, and Puth’s vocal harmonisation on ‘BOY‘ was exceptional, especially as he is an artist often overshadowed by the one-dimensional pop hits he churned out earlier in his career, like ‘See You Again‘ and ‘Marvin Gaye ft. Meghan Trainor‘.
‘I Warned Myself‘ has elements of what made his last album as great as it was, but I feel like it doesn’t quite meet the same heights. The simple bass-heavy instrumental works great with Puth’s vocals, yet I just felt like the song needed a bridge or a breakdown, or really just another part to it. As the chorus kicks in, there is a bit more of a distorted drum part and on the second chorus we hear a slight falsetto harmonisation from Puth, but that’s it. In the final seconds of the song, it starts to build up again, which gave me hope for perhaps a second part of the song, but ultimately it just ends.
The song is alright and shows listeners that Puth is still really talented and it’s clear that he hasn’t abandoned the musical style of his last album, however I just wish there was more to this song, as it’s a tad one-dimensional.
