Mura Masa – ‘I Don’t Think I Can Do This Again ft. Clairo’ Song Review

23 year old London electronic music producer Mura Masa is back with his first release of 2019: a collaboration with rising pop star, Clairo. The song, ‘I Don’t Think I Can Do This Again, signals a slight change in direction for Mura Masa, as the track uncharacteristically incorporates guitar music as well as electronic – but it works so well.

Mura Masa’s 2017 self-titled debut album used a lot of instruments like steel-drums and was primarily an electronic album. The rock/punk vibe of this new track is much edgier than his previous work, and the lyrics also feel like they have more depth. This is in part thanks to Clairo’s vocals, which work perfectly over the guitar backing of the verses, before Mura Masa resorts to a heavier more electronic backing for the chorus. The chorus itself is simple and catchy, with a bass-line somewhat reminiscent of Basement Jaxx‘s early noughties track ‘Where’s Your Head At‘.

Fresh off the release of her incredible debut album earlier this month, Clairo really helps to make this track what it is, and hopefully this song will help give the young artist even more of a platform. That being said, Mura Masa’s production is still as slick as always and I’m eager to hear what else comes from the new direction that he is seemingly heading in.
