I’m one of those people who buys vinyl records and then tends to go on about them a fair bit, but as this is my music blog I thought I’d start showing off some of the more interesting and unique records in my collection.

I saw the movie, ‘Beautiful Boy’ for the first time in April of 2019 and was immediately struck by the soundtrack. It’s honestly a great film with perfect performances from both Steve Carrell and Timothée Chalamet but their performances really are matched equally by the really solid soundtrack of original songs, 90s rock tracks and other random tracks that just work so well.
After my first viewing of the movie, I was disappointed that there was no official soundtrack released on vinyl. However after a bit of digging, I discovered that there was a limited pressing of a promotional record to promote the original single, ‘Treasure‘ that British singer Sampha recorded for the movie, with a B-Side of John Lennon’s song, ‘Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)‘.
Film and TV studios often create special merchandise to send to voters for The Grammys or The Oscars as a way to further promote their film, actor or soundtrack. If you look up on eBay “For Your Consideration (FYC)“, you’ll see various promotional items ranging from signed screenplays, to DVD’s with limited edition covers. In the case of ‘Beautiful Boy’, Warner/Amazon Studios chose to press a 7″ of the film’s lead single ‘Treasure‘ with a B-Side of the track that inspired the title of the film: ‘Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)‘, written and performed by John Lennon.

I stumbled across this record on eBay soon after I’d fallen in love with the film, and was lucky enough to grab a copy for myself at not too dear of a price. You wouldn’t guess that it was once just a free promotional single, as the sound quality is great and the simple beige-tinted cover works well given the vulnerability of both singles.
Hopefully a full movie soundtrack will be pressed at some point in the future, as I’d love to hear the eclectic collection of 90s rock tunes on wax, but for now I’ll count myself lucky to have this rare item.
