Who Will Headline the 2020 Super Bowl Halftime Show?

With the start of the NFL season earlier this month, it means that we are once again getting closer to one of the biggest headline shows in the world: The Super Bowl Halftime Show. Next year’s Super Bowl will be taking place in Miami, Florida, and rumours are already circulating as to who could be the next big artist to take this sought after slot. Let’s have a look at some acts who could take the stage on February 2nd 2020. (Also it’s probably worth noting that I have no real evidence for any of these predictions, but if they come true, you heard it here first.)

Jennifer Lopez (J. Lo)

J. Lo is currently on a press run for her upcoming movie ‘Hustlers’ and in a few interviews she’s been quite vague about a possible Super Bowl halftime performance, saying: “If they gave me that opportunity, I would take it.” Even before this statement, J. Lo seemed a frontrunner, given she has nearly two decades of hits, plenty of collaborations with other artists who could make guest appearances and from previous televised live performances, her showmanship and incredible stage presence is clear to see.

Shakira

If there was an artist would could be considered a safe choice for such a big performance, it would be Shakira. Having already performed at three world cups, she’s experienced the pressures of being the centre of the world’s attention and still manages to hit every note and put on a good show. Also, Shakira’s birthday is on February 2nd the scheduled date the 2020 Super Bowl – coincidence? We’ll have to wait and see.

Pitbull

As this year’s show is taking place in Miami, it would almost make sense for a Florida native to take the stage for the half time show. Pitbull aka Mr Worldwide has his fair share of hits and has collaborated with tonnes of other stars. Most recently the rapper has worked with Indian singer Guru Randhawa as well as Latin pop-star Tito El Bambino, so a Super Bowl headline slot for the rapper could really bring some much needed diversity to the Super Bowl.

Taylor Swift

Fresh off of the release of her stunning seventh album, ‘Lover‘, now might be the best time for Taylor Swift to truly prove herself by taking on the biggest gig in America. She definitely has the back catalogue of hits that even her haters can’t deny are classic catchy pop songs, and given the high production in her music videos I’m sure she’d put on a good show. This past week she was announced to headline the Melbourne Cup horse races, could this sporting event just be a warm up for her?

P!NK

The noughties pop-star, P!NK has had a busy 2019 so far, recently winning the Outstanding Contribution to Music Award at the Brits, as well as earning a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She certainly has enough hits, and has recently completed her sold-out seventh world tour. Whilst she’s not had any big hits in recent years, that wouldn’t necessarily stop what could be a killer throwback performance.

Post Malone

After securing yet another number one album with the release of ‘Hollywood’s Bleeding‘, it’s clear that Post Malone has the mass appeal for such a big performance, as well as plenty of catchy tracks. The only slight hiccup is that Post’s voice never quite sounds as good live as it does on records. Obviously he could use autotune or lip-sync, but maybe he’s more likely to just make a guest appearance instead of going solo.

Honorable Mentions

Obviously I can’t go through every possible performer, but there were a few other leading acts that we could see take on the headline slot. It’s been a few years since a real rock band took on the gig (no offence to Maroon 5), and I’d say Foo Fighters could be overdue the performance, or even a more classic rock group like Metallica. That said, the NFL seem to want to stay young and relevant given their inclusion of a viral Spongebob meme in last year’s performance, so I wouldn’t be surprised if rising star, Billie Eilish, rapper Cardi B, or The Jonas Brothers, fresh off of their comeback this year were to make guest appearances during someone else’s headline slot.
