Charlie Puth – ‘Mother’ Song Review

Popstar Charlie Puth is stepping up the promotion for his upcoming album with the another new single entitled ‘Mother‘. The song is a much more light-hearted track than the previous single he released ‘I Warned Myself‘, but ‘Mother‘ still has an amazingly catchy synth-bass line, which has become a staple of Puth’s recent pop production.

At a bet, the track is going to be on the radio a lot – so prepare yourself. The lyrics are pretty fun and harmless, as Puth describes how a girl’s mother wouldn’t be his biggest fan if she actually knew what they got up to. Now whilst there’s nothing that wrong with the song’s concept, it do find it a tad cringeworthy given that Puth is 27 years old. I mean no offence by this, but his last album ‘Voicenotes‘ perfectly discussed a lot of adult relationship issues, yet this track really feels like it’s catered to a younger audience with teenage problems of sneaking out from your parents house.

Throughout the song there’s a synth bass-line very reminiscent of Michael Jackson‘s ‘The Way You Make Me Feel‘, but it’s catchy as hell and works perfectly with the Puth’s falsetto harmonisation in the chorus. It’s definitely a different direction to his darker last single, but I’m glad that despite his experimentation with style, he’s still keeping his iconic catchy basslines.
