Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, Lana Del Rey – ‘Don’t Call Me Angel’ Song Review

As promo for the latest reboot of the Charlie’s Angels movie, Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus and Lana Del Rey have collaborated for the new track ‘Don’t Call Me Angel‘. This single was released with an accompanying music video which clearly has a pretty high production value, but the track itself is lacklustre, with no real depth or standout performances from any of the pop icons.

The song is billed as a collaboration between all three artists, but it’s more of an Ariana single with Miley and Lana as featured guests. I wish Lana Del Rey had a larger part on the song as her bridge is the only slight moment of redemption on the track. Miley’s first verse on the track feels so forced, as she tries to preach a message of female empowerment with a less than convincing delivery. Ariana’s hook on the chorus and flow on the second verse are nice enough, but nothing new or special given how great she’s been of late.

I also really wasn’t a fan of the repeated jingle that makes up the beat for the track – it’s not particularly catchy and if anything it distracts from the vocals in the song. Clearly a lot of money went into this track, judging by the music video and the fact the artists even did the track, especially given how reclusive Lana can be.

Obviously the song does the job of creating press for a movie reboot I didn’t even know was happening, but given the recent resurgence in putting a lot of effort into movie soundtracks (e.g Kendrick’s Black Panther album) I really did pray that ‘Don’t Call Me Angel‘ would have been 2019’s ‘Lady Marmalade‘: which is much more worthwhile giving a re-listen than wasting your time on this new track.
