Artist Spotlight: Sudan Archives

American violinist and singer Sudan Archives has announced her debut album ‘Athena‘ is to be released on November 1st of this year. The music she has released in her career thus far has been unique yet wonderful, as the singer has created her own experimental style; blending R&B, Afrobeat, electronic music and other influences, with her trusty violin. Ahead of her debut, it’s worth highlighting her standout tracks and why she’s worth paying attention to.

The track, ‘Come Meh Way‘ was the first track which gained Sudan Archives popularity. What’s most noticeable about the track is the hypnotic violin riff, which is effectively looped throughout the song. The blend of genres works brilliantly to create music which is worlds apart from anything that I’d heard before.

2018’s EP ‘Sink‘ included the brilliant track ‘Nont For Sale‘. This track is slightly catchier than some of her previous material, but again there’s the use of her iconic violin. What I loved the most about the track was the variation to her vocal delivery in the song; during the pre-chorus the flow, which is somewhat reminiscent of rapping, is truly mesmerising – with the track having a matching music video just as entrancing as the vocals.

Ahead of her debut album, Sudan Archives so far has shared one single: ‘Confessions‘. Sudan Archives sings of personal trauma, accompanied by the instrumental style fans now recognise as her trademark, but the track still sounds just as different as her other releases and also features a memorable and brilliantly sung chorus.

Sudan Archives is managing to creatively blend together sounds and genres which rarely are heard in the mainstream. The album ‘Athena‘ is definitely one to look out for and if her latest track is anything to go by, Sudan Archives is going to be big.
