Gig Review: Georgia, at Scala, London, 5/11/19

Georgia‘s debut London headline performance was an intimate and personal affair, as she demonstrated her incredible musical talent and skill for the sold-out 800 person crowd at Scala. Georgia stormed through her hour-long set of catchy pop tracks and electronic dance hits, alone on stage, with only drum set for accompaniment.

Over the course of the night, Georgia didn’t miss a beat; singing with energy and passion throughout each track and only breaking from her stellar drumming to run out to the crowd for high-fives and hugs. The audience was a real mix, as it seemed that for every younger pop-fan in attendance, there was an old ‘raver’ checking out the emerging talent of Georgia. A few metres to my right stood a group of Georgia’s old school friends, who passed over their phone at one point to Georgia, mid-song, so she could wave to a friend on FaceTime who hadn’t made the show, whilst over to my left was Georgia’s Mum, who’s levels of excitement seemed to match the energy of Georgia herself.

Everyone at the concert felt lucky to be in attendance: partly because of the general vibe and positive energy of the evening, but mainly because of the chance to see Georgia’s incredible talent before her inevitable rise to fame. Georgia herself passionately said, “It means the world honestly. It’s just the beginning, just the beginning.”

“I’ll have to hold it together cause otherwise I’ll cry”

The set itself covered a lot of unreleased tracks set for release on Georgia’s 2020 album ‘Seeking Thrills‘ such as the catchy ‘Ray Guns‘, but some of her older tracks like the electronic single ‘Nothing Solutions‘, released back in 2015, still hyped up the crowd just as much as newer songs. Georgia brought out support act Shygirl for the upcoming album track ‘Mellow‘ and a few other collaborators to tease further unreleased album tracks. Other highlights came from Georgia’s leading singles ‘Started Out‘, which ended with a great drum solo, as well as ‘About Work the Dancefloor which was unanimously sang along to by the whole of Scala.

This is a very special moment for me and all you as well,” Georgia said before the show came to its end and she was right: Georgia’s passion and excitement was infectious and I’m sure that her energy will be transferable to larger scale venues as she inevitably grows as an artist – something that I can’t wait to see.
