I first heard the House Gospel Choir randomly at an event back in 2018 as a part of the ‘British Summer Time’ events in Hyde Park. During their 30 minute performance I was immediately hooked: their energy was just infectious, as they recreated house-music classics with their gospel choir. The mix of genres may seem odd, but give it a listen – it works so well! Last week when I spotted that the House Gospel Choir had officially released their own single rather than just covering another house classic, I knew I had to check it out, and I wasn’t disappointed.
In their debut solo song, the House Gospel Choir enlist the help of the Adelphi Music Factory for the track ‘Salvation‘. The tune is a typical sounding house anthem, with a catchy and pounding beat, but the sound of the choir echoing “You’re my sweet, sweet salvation‘ during the hook of the song works perfectly and is so unique. Searching through YouTube, you can find countless clips from the group’s festival performances, but a medley of garage tracks performed late last year on BBC 1Xtra truly showcases in high quality the vocal ability of the choir as well as their talent for bringing their own spin to pre-existing tracks of a different genre.
The choir are currently in the process of recording a full debut album, and if the tracks on there match the feel-good energy of their debut single, I feel that we’ll be hearing a lot from the group in the future.
